SELASI aka “The African Kid”

Selasi was born in Ghana, West Africa and his father was Ghanaian while his mom was born in Nigeria. He lived in Ghana but traveled all over the continent of Africa from Cameroon, Nigeria, and Malawi to Zimbabwe and South Africa as a child. “My father was a computer analyst, but later became a preacher; so my musical foundation came originally from the church. I don’t mean just one type of church, his soul-searching journey took us from the Catholic Church to non-denominational church and each time I found myself in the band or music ministry. I used to run from where my mother was sitting to where the band was playing and I’d sit and study the drummer, pick up the sticks, and imitate whatever he was doing. It was natural for me; I could hear a rhythm or melody and just start playing. I discovered my God-given ability to make music observing the musicians. Eventually I taught myself to play drums and the keyboard.”

When he was old enough, Selasi trekked to Atlanta hoping to become a music star in America. His parents stressed the importance of an education, so he enrolled in college studying International Business & Marketing working at a car wash to support himself. While at the car wash, he met someone who was also a musician and they introduced him to the owner of an independent label. His first studio session was engineering for Rasheeda, who at the time was signed to Universal Records. Since then he’s creatively worked with Grammy Award winning multi-platinum singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss, 2Chainz, Golden Globe nominee Idris Elba, Hip-life star Sarkodie, afro-reggae artist Stonebwoy, Keyshia Cole, Akon, Nas, Jagged Edge, Trey Songz, Bobby Valentino, Freddie Jackson, GS Boyz, Pimp C, Ying Yang Twins, Rasheeda, Killer Mike, Rich Kidz, Petey Pablo, Yung Joc and more.

While recording for others, Selasi, never gave up his dream of releasing his own album. In 2014, he released a 5 track EP, Shades Of Grey through his own label, Rocksteady Music available on itunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/shades-of-grey-ep/id572934002

There’s no telling where Selasi’s next journey will take him but one things for sure, his first love, music will accompany him. “Music speaks from the soul and to the soul and that’s why you can appreciate it even if you don’t understand the language,” expresses Selasi. “I just want people to listen to my music because it’ll take you to places you’ve never been. Places you’d never imagine you’d go.”
